Penile Prosthesis Implantation

Erectile Dysfunction and Penile Prosthesis Implantation

Erectile dysfunction refers to the inability to achieve or maintain an erection due to insufficient blood flow to the penis when a man receives sexual stimulation. This condition can be caused by various factors such as circulatory disorders, hormonal imbalances, neurological issues, stress, environmental pollution, and irregular lifestyle habits. Although erectile dysfunction is not a life-threatening disease, it significantly impacts a man’s self-esteem and sexual life, making appropriate treatment and management necessary.

When we think of the word "implant," most people associate it with dentistry or orthopedics, but penile prosthesis implantation is also commonly performed in urology. It is especially a modern treatment that can offer a ray of hope for recovery for patients with erectile dysfunction.

The penis contains two columns of spongy tissue, and an erection occurs when blood fills these tissues. Penile prosthesis implantation involves inserting a silicone cylinder that replaces the function of the spongy tissue. When the cylinder is filled with saline solution, the penis expands, and when the solution is released, it contracts. This principle helps in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Types of Penile Prosthesis Implantation

Malleable Penile Implant

A malleable penile implant involves inserting a flexible, reinforced cylinder into the penile corpora cavernosa that can be bent and straightened. It is kept bent when not in use and is straightened during sexual intercourse to maintain an erection.

Compared to inflatable penile implants, the surgery is simpler, and since there is no pump or fluid reservoir, the risk of mechanical failure is lower. Additionally, it is relatively more affordable.

Inflatable Penile Implant

The inflatable penile implant consists of a pump, a fluid reservoir, and two cylinders, and unlike the malleable implant, it works in a way similar to natural erections, making it one of the most advanced and highly rated treatments for erectile dysfunction with high patient satisfaction.

This procedure involves inserting inflatable cylinders into the penile corpora, a control pump into the scrotum, and a fluid reservoir into the lower abdomen behind the pubic bone. When needed, activating the pump moves the fluid from the reservoir into the cylinders, resulting in an erection.

Most patients are able to recover their erectile function, which is an important part of male confidence, within a few weeks after an implant surgery that takes about an hour. Especially, inflatable penile implants provide a natural erection, leading to a high level of satisfaction.

Penile Prosthesis Implantation
The malleable penile implant is stored in a bent position under normal circumstances and straightened during intercourse to maintain an erection, while the inflatable penile implant induces an erection by transferring fluid through a pump when desired.

Although it varies by individual, generally, sexual intercourse can be resumed after a recovery period of 4 to 6 weeks following the surgery.
